Paediatric Surgery

Pediatric surgeons work with young patients - from premature and unborn babies to children up to 19 years old and young adults.

You will have a very diverse and sometimes unpredictable workload, including surgeries, outpatient clinics and hospital ward visits, and caring for your young patients and their families.

Aims and Scope

  • Introduce rare or exceptional clinical cases in neonatal, pediatric and pediatric surgical care

  • Present specific clinical findings that may reflect new or alternative perceptions of existing surgical procedures and how they relate to pediatric care

  • To supplement the original research and reviews published in the European Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports of Pediatric Surgery with clinical data and cases

  • To promote the exchange of information between the various features and sub-features involved in pediatric surgical care.

Life as a paediatric surgeon

You will have more common types of surgery such as abdominal, trauma or implant surgery, as well as special procedures such as neonatal surgery, often for congenital malformations. You can also perform complex surgeries for children with disabilities to improve their quality of life.

Only over 10% of operations on young children are performed by pediatric surgeons and most surgeons are performed by other specialist surgeons in the fields of orthopedic, plastic and ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgery.

Some consultants are interested in areas such as pediatric orthopedics or neurosurgery, but they come from these surgical training routes rather than pediatric surgeries. You will work in partnership with these partners, either in dedicated pediatric hospitals or in pediatric Pediatric Surgery Case Reports units in large hospitals.

You will also participate in outpatient clinics and ward trips where you will meet your patients and their parents or carers. An important part of your job is to provide reassurance and advice to concerned parents and carers that can be beneficial as well as emotionally demanding.

Your clinical workload will consist primarily of daily activities. The rates for emergency surgery and on-call work are relatively low compared to other facilities.
