What Is a Case Report Now?

The case report is a clever idea that emerges from the doctor-patient interaction. Authors can make an exception to the existing paradigm by extending the "if 1, then some" proposition and thus demand a new paradigm capable of incorporating these exceptions. Case reports can be a starting point for hypothesis-testing research. Authors may suggest new treatments or warn early about the unpleasant consequences of new treatments or they may increase the reader's practice level. The articles in this supplement provide examples of some of these different types of case reports in pediatrics.
